Civic Leadership Award Honoree 2012

Ashley Lorano

Heart! Through her deep faith and devotion to community, Ashley Lorano, 25, is passionately committed to making a difference in the lives of others. In 2009, she started her own grassroots charity, Party with a Purpose, where she raised $5,200 for Stand Up to Cancer in 2010, $17,000 to build an orphanage for 12 children in 2011, and is currently raising funds to build a second orphanage in India for 12 more children this December. Ashley’s vision for Party with a Purpose was “turning heartache into hope” in light of a personal tragedy after losing her best friend. Through her fundraising efforts, she has currently raised over $30,000 to support specific social causes.

Throughout the year, Ashley devotes her time to many other charitable organizations. Since 2010, she has mentored four students through the Winning Futures program and with her diligence two of the students were awarded $2,000 college scholarships. In 2008 she became an active member of the Live to Give Foundation and was vital in raising over $15,000 for local charities such as The Bottomless Toy Chest, Young Detroit Builders, and Hostel Detroit.

Ashley also started a grassroots charity called Bennie’s Backpacks at SRG Global, where she is currently employed. Through this fundraiser, SRG Global raised over $1,000 and filled 26 backpacks in 2011 for students within the Warren and Detroit area. She is currently working on collecting school supplies and donations for students this school year.

Among all her fundraising efforts, Ashley enjoys volunteering at her church as a worship leader, anti–human trafficking activist and community outreach volunteer as well as participating in the Sunday school program. During her college years, she served as President of the human resource society board where she influenced the department to become more involved in their local community, developing two major fundraisers - making sandwiches for the guest of Grace Centers of Hope and raising money for different local charities each year.

“Helping others turn their heartache into hope is my passion. Whether it's mentoring the student who needs encouragement, advocating for trafficking victims, raising funds for cancer research or building an orphanage, I want to do all I can to make a difference. To receive an award for this is truly humbling and a great honor. Thank you Twilight Foundation for the work that you do and for inspiring me to continue to bring hope to our communities and to the world.”
